I Asked AI for a Recipe — Here’s How It Turned Out!

Late last week, I decided to do a little experiment. I asked AI to create a recipe for me. The original prompt that I wrote into the chat was: “Create a recipe for a cake that I can make this weekend that uses fruit that is in-season this time of year. I want the cake to be elegant with rich flavors and perhaps a flavor combination that is unexpected but still tastes excellent.”

Within moments, the chat filled up with a recipe for a Brown Butter Peach Cake. After some refining of what I was looking for in the recipe (type of cake, title of recipe, editing some ingredients), I was eventually satisfied with what the generator had assembled for me.

The original recipe can be found by clicking here. The formatting is my own.

A Potential Game-Changer in the Cooke World!

Last week, I told you all that I misjudged the Bake From Scratch cookbooks. The one I originally reviewed didn’t have much appeal to me. However, I will now admit that I was wrong. Baking a recipe out of the fifth volume proves it!

Better Than Sex Cake

Last week I obtained a new cookbook for my collection. B. Dylan Hollis’s cookbook features recipes from every decade between 1900 and 1980. If you haven’t heard of Dylan, he became TikTok-famous in 2020 when he started making recipes from the antique cookbooks in his collection. When I heard he was coming out with a cookbook that featured many of the recipes he made online, I knew I had to order it.

Baking Something New

Earlier this week my reserved copy of Dylan Hollis’ cookbook, Baking Yesteryear arrived at my doorstep. Have you heard of Dylan? No! I’m surprised, especially if you are someone who spends a significant amount of time on social media.

During quarantine, Dylan started making TikTok shorts of him baking recipes from his vintage cookbook collection. The recipes ranged in dates from the 1900s to the 1980s. Thanks to his personality and delivery of his content, he went viral. In fact, I came across his stuff on Instagram then used YouTube to watch more. Since he became popular, he started posting a few, longer-form videos on YouTube that have a very different vibe than his TikToks. If you haven’t seen him yet, go and check him out. He’s quite entertaining.

Similar to most people who become popular online, he ended up releasing a cookbook featuring some of the best recipes from each decade that he cooked from. (Gotta diversify that income stream, I suppose.)

I am quite intrigued with his content and his cookbook, so this weekend I plan to bake one of the recipes from it. I haven’t decided which one yet, or even which decade. Though the cookies that are called
“Rocks” is really calling to me for some reason. What is interesting about these recipes is that they are quite different from the ones I’ve been using lately.

The recipes from the Depression don’t usually have ingredients such as butter because it was a lot harder to come by during those harsh economic times (though, one could argue that paying close to $5 a pound is similar). These recipes were also designed to use up with people had on hand, another requirement for large families trying to survive the period.

Much like fashion and hair styles have changed with each decade, so did America’s taste buds. There are some ingredients in his content that I would never dream of using such as Cool Whip or margarine. That’s why I want to do this. I want to expand my horizons and accept the fact that I don’t need the top quality ingredients every time I want to make something.

I can’t wait to share with you all what I baked!

Zoe Bakes’ Lemon Curd Pound Cake

For regular readers of this blog, you may remember that over the weekend I made an angel food cake. This meant I was left with over a dozen (yes, over a dozen!!) egg yolks. In baking, egg whites have a little more uses than just the yolks do, so I was a little sad about this. However, then I remembered I could make lemon curd. What’s even better is I found a recipe that made one the best lemon curds I’ve ever had and it even gets folded into a lovely pound cake.

A Cake That’s As Light As a Cloud

March is a busy month in my family. My father’s birthday was a couple weeks ago and this past week, it was my mother’s turn to advance past go once again. Wouldn’t it be great if we could collect $200 just for having a birthday? Anyway, as per usual, I offered to bake her cake. And this year, she requested something that I’ve never made before.

Angel food cake.

Christmas Gift Cookbook For the Win!

I can’t believe it’s almost March! I’m a little ashamed to write this post since it’s dealing with some Christmas gifts I received from a very good friend of mine. Who would have thought it would have taken me almost two full months to have an opportunity to bake something with them. One of the very few baking-related gifts I got this year was an excellent cookbook entitled Snackable Bakes by Jessie Sheehan. It was one of New York Times best cookbooks of 2022, and after making a recipe from it, I can see why.

Gingerbread in January? The Answer is, Yes!!

It’s hard to believe that we are almost two weeks into 2023 already! Every year, I find myself reflecting around this time on all the hustle and bustle of the holidays. How quickly it begins and how quickly it comes to an end. The time period for creating dishes “holiday” flavors is so short and chaotic, that I barely had a chance to make anything last month.

I love baking and using the holiday flavors: peppermint, pumpkin spice, gingerbread, apple, cranberry, and walnut, just to name a few. So, I decided to make this delicious looking gingerbread cake in January. Don’t tell the food police!

Cupcakes, Party Style!

With my birthday being last week, I decided to make the cupcakes for the work-related celebration everyone gets. I could have went “over the top,” but frankly, I wanted to keep it simple. So, I found a recipe from Sally’s Baking Addition and got to work.

I made her Confetti Vanilla Cupcakes with Vanilla Frosting. The addition of the sprinkles to the decorations really made me feel like I was serving up a party! The pop of color was a fun addition!

Weekend Baking May 8, 2021

For a few months now, I have been OBSESSED with a baking blog I stumbled across one afternoon. Sally’s Baking Addiction, is my go-to place to find wonderful recipes that are well-tested and taste just as good as they look!

So far, I’ve made a few of her recipes and they’ve always turned out great. Shortly after signing up to receive her blog’s emails, I learned that she offers a monthly baking challenge. Which I thought would be a great thing for me to do. Usually, the recipes she chooses for the monthly challenge are complex and have special skills or non-standard ingredients. Other times they are just technically involved. Such as macaroons or hand pies.
