Yesterday was bitterly cold here in Connecticut! In fact, it was the first time since 2019 that we had a wind chill advisory!
Despite the chilly temperatures, my yard looked pretty thanks to the dusting of snow Thursday morning. More snow is possibly on the way! I have a love/hate relationship with winter and winter weather. One day, I’ll explain more about it. But for now, here’s a picture of my snow-dusted back yard.

I just wanted to make a quick post to tell you all that I will be making a Yule Log cake later this week for Christmas. This is something I’ve always wanted to make, but have been too intimidated by the thought of it to actually do it. However, due to the pandemic and spending more time in the kitchen, I now feel I am confident enough to do it!
I found a wonderful recipe that can actually be completed over a couple days. So, I will be making the cake and filling it on Wednesday. I will cover it with ganache and make some of the decorations on Thursday and then assemble everything for presentation Friday afternoon.

I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of the winter months and the cold weather. But, since I live in New England, I don’t have much of a choice. It is true, the last few winters have not been that bad overall: not a lot of snow, mostly a “mix” and I was able to see my grass for most of them. Despite the lack of snow, the winters were still bitterly, bitterly cold.
However, today I was reminded of the beauty of a December morning.
One of the benefits of this time of year is I am more often than not up early enough to watch the sunrise. And look at those colors! So pretty and bright!
A downside though, is by the time my work day ends, the sun is already asleep.
But, there is some hope: I heard that sunsets after 5:00 PM begin at the end of January! Only a few weeks…long weeks, for sure…but it’ll be here soon enough. Even 2020 has seemed to “go by” quickly. For me, at least.
I hope everyone had a glorious Thanksgiving! My family and I appreciated the different style of celebrating that 2020 brought us. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a chance to cook any Ina recipes for Thanksgiving. I know, I’m as upset as you all are! But, I did cook something Saturday night for dinner, the post will come tomorrow!
And what’s different about this one is it is NOT an Ina recipe! Her recipes will return soon though…stay tuned, as always!
This year, Thanksgiving will be much smaller than usual. However, it will also give my family a chance to cook for a change. We usually visit our relatives on Thanksgiving and they handle the cooking.
To help my parents with the meal, I have offered to handle the sides. Over the weekend we agreed on carrots and green beans. I will be looking through Ina’s cookbooks tonight and tomorrow for a recipe that will work well for those choices.
I can’t NOT cook an Ina recipe on the largest food holiday of the year, right?
Hi Everyone!
I know the blog has been quiet, and I want to apologize for that. I have decided to take a short hiatus from writing the cookbook reviews. I will probably resume with one or two in December. The rest will be completed in 2021.
I did not cook anything Ina-related last week, so I have no new recipes to post. However, I do plan to make a few things this week and this weekend. So, stay tuned! I also plan to write more posts in the “Shopping” category. This will entail buying special groceries or tools and what not.

After some thinking, I’ve decided to expand the blog a bit.
This blog will always be about Ina and cooking my way through her cookbooks and recipes, but I’ve decided that there may be a time when I want to share something more personal.
So, I’ve added a new category!
It’s called “Life” and it’s where all the posts pertaining to my life will go. Now, this doesn’t mean “lifestyle.” So, no lame, overused photos of PSLs and winter fires during a snow storm. But it will be the more personal posts, not necessarily Ina related.
